Rutherford's Atomic Theory

Rutherford's Atomic Theory;

 Rutherford performed 'Gold Foil' experiment to understand how negative and positive charges could coexist in an atom.He bombared alpha particles on a 0.00004 cm thick gold foil.Alpha particles are emitted elements like radium and polonium.These are actually helium nuclei.They can penetrate through matter to some extent.

The main aspects of Rutherford's atomic theory are explained in the following;

  1. It was based upon classical theory.
  2. Electrons revolves around the nucleus.
  3. No idea about orbit introduced.
  4. Atoms should produce continuous spectrum.
  5. Atoms should collapse.
